Throughout the month of Demonstration, more than 126 Hawaii restaurants will offer at least one special dish made with a locally grown, caught or raised product. It’s part of the Hawaii Agricultural Base’s second annual Localicious Hawaii promotion. Each time the dish is ordered, restaurants will donate $1 to HAF’s Veggie U educational program. The ambition is to raise public awareness of restaurants that are committed to sustaining our local agricultural industry and also teaming up with them to raise funds for agricultural education in our business schools. Last year, 58 restaurants participated and raised $31,000 for 65 fourth grade public school classes using the 25-schooling Veggie U curriculum that combines science, health, language arts, and math into an engaging educational experience for students. As part of the campaign, HAF and Hawaii Gas will also backer a new art and essay contest, “My Favorite Dish and Where it Comes From,” for students in grades K-6. The contest is designed to expose children at a young age to where food comes from. There are two categories, an art object to for students in grades K-3 and an art and essay contest for students in grades 4-6. A winner will be selected from each category and will receive a class party with a celebrity chef and an Apple Ipad mini. Participating restaurants incorporate 12th Avenue Grill, 3660 on the Rise, Alan Wong’s Honolulu, ‘AMA’AMA, Annie’s Island Fresh Burger, Arancino on Beachwalk, Arancino at Kahala, Arancino Di Mare, Auntie Pasto’s Kunia, Big Big apple Diner, Kailua, Kaimuki,...
