Just like many dogs, the sudden loss of mobility had an immediate and adverse effect on his mood. Bernard became more withdrawn as he struggled to move about, seeming to settle into a profound and lasting funk as he suffered against what would later be diagnosed as severe arthritis. Czarnecki said they chose his name based on the tall, lanky physique he displayed as a puppy, and how he seemed to carry himself with a “dignity and reserve” that felt decidedly English. “You know some dogs how you scratch their belly (and) they flop on their backs and just melt.
